Dedication to My Loving Caretaker

Dedication to My Loving Caretaker

Escape with haste when Ma gives you this look

Who says Halloween is over?!

Below, I wrote a poem and article about how loving and caring my grandma is. The article talks about our relationship and bond, but it also talks about my fears and insecurities.

My grandmother is my “rock.” She is also the glue that holds much of my family together. My grandparents make a great team in general, and without them, I wouldn’t have received an upbringing full of care, patience, and love.

We’ll Be Seeing Each Other Again Soon

& should I die
I know you’d be
at my funeral
or hand in hand:
by my side

w/ your cuts and bruises:
speckled rings of fuchsia
swollen purple with varicose
veins running down your side.

you were always there for me
like no other, & though I can’t ever
repay you for your love (or long hours)
I am here with you now, side by side:
should you fade, or should you ever
reach for light (as you ignite and die).

Unconditional Love

As a grandparent, it’s my grandma’s job to spoil me, call me handsome, and provide for me in any way she can. Growing up, I was just as close to her as I was to my mom. I’ve received support from my friends and family, but particularly from my maternal grandparents, that has literally saved my life (over and over again) during my darkest hours.

Throughout my life, I’ve questioned if I could get by on my own. I suffer from mental illness and am chronically disabled as a result. Not long ago, I was also experiencing panic attacks every single day.

Though I’ve always known that my grandma is wise, I’ve recently come to an enlightening conclusion. I’ve grown into a better man, with more wisdom and emotional strength, than I had ever given myself credit for. My mom and grandparents (on both sides of my family) are largely responsible for that.

The poem in this article is dedicated to my grandma because it saddens me to think of what life will be like when she is gone. One day, I hope to carry on her legacy by being even half as thoughtful or giving as she is.

Now, you tell me! Besides the Evil Queen (who my grandma used to dress up as), what are some of your favorite Halloween-themed monsters and villains? Two of mine are Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster.
